Day 47: Ugh.

Sorry I have been remiss in blogging, but I don't have internet at home (was "borrowing" a neighbors wifi connection, but they got wise), so now I have to update when at work.

Just a quick note as it's a BUSY week and I got to get to it; yesterday ran for 12 minutes, walked for 48, completed over 3 miles (more on Wii miles vs. reality later). Spent a half hour in the weight room working the legs and the abs (which can be worked every day- ugh, who knew?) and today my obliques are a touch tender. Managed to crawl outta bed at 5 this morning and made it to the gym when it opened at 5:30. Did 12 minutes in the pool (I wasn't able to swim the entire time, because it totally kicks my butt, but kept moving the entire time) if I wasn't swimming I was walking back and forth with the little old ladies. Then completed 22 minutes on the recumbent bike which though I had it set very low left me sweaty and panting. Not sure if I should be happy that I got a good work out or feel pathetic that it takes so little to give me a good workout. :)

Good start to the week all in all. You?

Triathlon what?

So I didn't get to the gym till 9:30 and it turns out closing time was 10:00. By the time I got suited up I only had time to swim for the 16 minutes required, which turns out to be a good thing because after swimming I'm not sure how well I would have done on the exercise bike. As I feared swimming is most likely going to be my weakest event. I wasn't able to move continually the entire 16 minutes. Go figure. I haven't spent any real amount of time in the water since junior high.

I did get home and turn on the Fit and did a "sorta" 30 minute run, in place of the 30 minute bike ride I was supposed to do. I jogged around the apartment cleaning things up and tidying. It wasn't a real run, but I got a bit of cardio in (clocked in over 2 miles). Not great, but not bad, at least I'm not as intimidated by this workout as I was before tonight. Looking forward to tomorrow's 16 minute run and upper body workout!

Day 41: A review of the first day at the gym...

Hit the gym for the first time last night (now that I was properly outfitted). LOVED IT! Started with the tread mill, walked at a brisk pace for 5 minutes then ran for the prescribed 12 minutes on my training schedule then walked another 18 minutes to complete 35 minutes of cardio. What was exciting was to find "my pace" and I was able to jog comfortably. Very exciting stuff, considering last time I ran I felt like I was fighting gravity the entire time and it was less then fun. I know that hitting the bricks will be different then running on a treadmill, but it was still encouraging.

And the weight lifting! Just worked the lower body last night, but it was awesome! I love weight lifting. The leg press machine and I are going to be great friends. Will do upper body tomorrow and lower body again the next running day after that and will switch (starting with arms) the next week.

Yesterday's food choices were not great (had a Luna bar for breakfast because I was running late. Grabbed an all beef hot dog at Costco for lunch because it was cheap and fast. Had a couple of fruit leathers for snacks and had the guts of a carne asada burrito for dinner, water intake was around 80 ounces, not bad) and I'm finding that keeping up the 4 meals of 400 calories is a trial.

Today, I'm supposed to swim for 16 minutes and bike for 32 minutes, but my schedule is jam packed! I don't get back from Awana's till 9:00, but I'm gonna try and get this in. I have yet to get in the pool and the rules and dynamics of it all seem intimidating to me. This is, right now, my weakest point (never having learned to breast stroke or free style or any other "proper" way of swimming- I just paddle along, usually under the water. Pretty sure that's not the fastest, best, and possibly triathlon "legal" way of swimming. ::sigh::) Still for now, I just need to get in the stinking water, so that's what I'm concentrating on.

Well if the pounds don't start to shake off...

Day 39: In which our heroine eats properly and attempts to shop...

Exercise:
30 minutes free step on the Wii

Breakfast:
Kashi Go Lean with nonfat milk
20 oz. water

Lunch:
Southwest grilled chicken salad from McD's
Diet Coke
20 oz. water

Snack:
Pear

Snack:
Luna Bar
20 oz. water

Dinner:
1 baked potato topped with turkey keilbasa, saurkraut, and onion
1 diet grapefruit soda

Dessert:
1 apple

Exercise:
20 minute jog on the Wii

Got through gym "orientation" today, so now I supposedly know how to operate the treadmills, stationary bikes, eliptical machines, and a plethora of nautilus equipment. We'll see how much I retain tomorrow. Was planning on hitting the gym later this evening with Fox, but realized we were sadly lacking in exercise clothing, so instead off to Fred Meyer we went to get Fox a couple pairs of shorts and myself some sweat pants.

And can I point out how lame it is to have to spend money on a gym membership and then have to spend MORE money on proper clothing and the craptastic irony of getting to the store to try on said proper clothing only to feel fat and dumpy? Clearly work out clothes are not designed for the people who most need them because the last thing I want to do is be seen working out in these clothes. ::sigh::

My weekend in review....

Too. Much. Junk. Food.

You?

Mmmmmm....

What's that delicious smell you ask? Homemade vegetable beef barley soup made with haggis broth, last night's left over pot roast au jus, and the last of this mornings coffee. I love it when I can salvage left overs and make them into something not only edible, but delicious as well!

Time to warm the oven for the multigrain artisan loaf!

Dieting is so hard. HA!

Cold Reality

So the alarm went off at 5 and I got out of bed! Victory! By the time I stepped out of the car at the track, suited up and ready to run, it was 5:20. And did I start out with some light stretching or a few "warm-up" laps of brisk walking? No! That makes too much sense and takes too much time. I just jumped right in to a jogging pace. Typical me.

It didn't take long to realize that, yes, as expected, gravity would effect my ability to put in the miles. The jogging trampoline really protects the joints and after a mile and a quarter (5 laps) my breathing/cardio was ok, but knees and ankles were hating me! I had been running for 15 minutes so having hit the prescribed 12 minute mark I slowed to a walk. I walked at a brisk pace for 3 more laps, then started up jogging again. I forced myself to complete 3 more laps so I could honestly say I had run 2 miles today and then walked my final lap to "cool down". Mileage all told: 3 miles.

Those last 2 laps of running were brutal! My naturally lazy self kept saying, "good enough!" But my stubborn self kept saying, "triathlon huh? You think so? Keep moving!" My stubborn self seems to be related to my snarky self.

When I got in the car to head home it was 6:00. So 3 miles in 40 minutes, not my usual of 4+ miles in 30 minutes, but that was to be expected. Thursday is my next run day and the time prescribed is 16 minutes. I think I'll walk a half mile to warm up, then run those 16 minutes, then walk until I reach 3 miles.

The training has begun.

Day 32: Counting Calories and Thoughts on Running

Ran one hour this morning and clocked in 9 miles. Didn't run more because, I'm looking for that optimal burn rate.

Breakfast:
1 grape fruit leather
Sweetened non-fat cottage cheese with cinnamon and Ezekiel 4:9 Golden Flax Cereal
20 oz. water
Coffee with cream and cinnamon
Total calorie intake: 370

Snack:
Fruit Leather
20 oz. water
Total calorie intake: 45

Lunch:
2 whole wheat tortillas topped with fat-free cheddar (never again to be purchased), sliced Roma tomato and pickled jalapenos.
Diet lemon/lime soda
20 oz. water
Total calorie intake: 380

Snack:
20 oz. water
1 Hershey's Kiss
Total calorie intake: 30

Dinner:
5 oz. (guesstimating ounces) pot roast
Small scoop of rice with a few carrots
Half a plate of sauteed cabbage
20 oz. water
Total calories intake: 460
Total daily calories taken: 1285, short 315

So I didn't quite hit the 4 at 400 (probably should have had bulkier snacks), but my energy levels were good all day and honestly, I never felt hungry. I was pretty focused on getting the apartment clean (worked all day and is it totally clean? No. Bathroom still needs to be cleaned and I need to make up the beds with clean sheets) which could explain the lack of hunger (I was really hoping to get the whole place done).

Rocked the water intake! I had a diet soda bottle left over from yesterday. I cleaned it out and just kept it full of water all day. It's really easy to knock back 20 oz. at a go when you're in constant motion.

Didn't make it to Parks and Rec to get a gym membership, but that's because Matt had the car all day. I might try and get signed up tomorrow or maybe Thursday. Tomorrow, I hit the road. Gonna try running on real pavement, with gravity and everything! On the trampoline/Fit I can knock out 7-9 miles in an hour, but my triathlon training program suggests to start running for 12 minutes at a go. I'm thinking I can handle more then 12 minutes, BUT I haven't been running on hard ground so... while I'd like to think I can sustain running for 30 minutes to an hour we'll just see how it goes tomorrow.

Well I'm bushed! Off to give myself a quick pedi before bed.

Food for Life

Ok, digging the new Ezekiel cereal! Pour it over yogurt or sweetened cottage cheese and delish! Much better then Grape Nuts, this cereal actually provides taste as well as texture. Just a little dietary FYI.
